ユーティリティとはMacをもっと楽しく便利に使うための、小さなソフトウエア。
ユーティリティは、その性質からいくつかのグループ（アプリケーション、DA、INIT、cdev）に分類されたが、そんなことはいちいち気にしないでシステムに放りこんだユーザが多かった。結果、爆弾マークに見舞われたり、Macが挙動不審な動作を繰り返した。最悪はシステムが起動しなくなったりと大変な思いをした。
特に、INIT/cdev類（イニット／シーデブ）はその扱いには特に注意が必要で、入れることで組み合わせによってMac内部で機能同士が衝突（コンフリクト）を起こす恐れがあった。

システムはシステムヒープという、システムが自分自身の動作に必要なメモリを確保しているが、INIT/cdev類はその大切な部分のメモリを食い荒らしてしまうことになる。
私のお気に入り、The Grouch、EyeballsはINITにあたるが、どんな組み合わせでも安定して動作する優れもだった。
INITは起動時に、システムに読み込まれ、システムにさまざまな機能を追加した。cdevはcontrolpanel deviceの略。INIT同様に、起動時、システムに読み込まれたが、名が示すとおりコントロールパネルで設定を行うことができた。
またINIT/cdev類はシステムヒープにも悪影響を及ぼしかねなかった。
