Illustrator 日本語版にはなぜか88の記述がない。しかしIllustrator日本語版 Ver1.9.3はIllustrator88 Version1.9.3がベースであることは明らか。
モノクロ画面では表示されないが、グレースケール画面ではIllustrator日本語版1.93のアイコンに88のマークがはっきり確認できた。

Adobe Illustrator was first developed for the Apple Macintosh in 1986 (shipping in January 1987) as a commercialization of Adobe's in-house font development software and PostScript file format. Adobe Illustrator is the companion product of Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop is primarily geared toward digital photo manipulation and photorealistic styles of computer illustration, while Illustrator provides results in the typesetting and logo graphic areas of design. Early magazine ads (featured in graphic design trade magazines such as Communication Arts) referred to the product as "the Adobe Illustrator". Illustrator 88 was released in 1988 and introduced many new tools and features.

Illustratorをストレスなく使いこなすには、上級機種が必要だ。
CPU68030のMacintosh IIci(5MB/160HD)は898,00円、Macintosh IIfx(4MB/160HD)は1,008,00円した。
CPU68040のQuadra700(4MB/400HD)ともなると1,448,00円した。最上機種のQuadra900(8MB/400HD)は1,838,00円もした。
Although, during its first decade, Adobe developed Illustrator primarily for Macintosh, it sporadically supported other platforms. In the early 1990s, Adobe released versions of Illustrator for NeXT, Silicon Graphics IRIX, and Sun Solaris platforms, but they were discontinued due to poor market acceptance. The first version of Illustrator for Windows, version 2.0, was released in early 1989 and flopped. The next Windows version, version 4.0, was widely criticized as being too similar to Illustrator 1.1 instead of the Macintosh 3.0 version, and certainly not the equal of Windows' most popular illustration package CorelDraw. (Note that there were no versions 2.0 or 4.0 for the Macintosh - although the second release for the Mac was titled Illustrator 88 - the year of its release.) Version 4 was, however the first version of Illustrator to support editing in preview mode, which did not appear in a Macintosh version until 5.0 in 1993.

当時、（1994年頃）Illustratorを、正規で購入することは「夢のまた夢」予算的に無理であった。もちろん、この時、なぜか私はIllustrator 5.0を手にしていたのですが。
Macの将来に大きな夢と期待を抱いていた私は、Illustratorが無理であれば、せめて正規版のSuper Paintだけでも手に入れたいと思った。購入方法を試行錯誤するうちに、海外のShopから購入するのが、送料込みでも安上がりと判断、早速、雑誌MACWORLD(U.S.A.)を丸善で購入、海外へ発送可能な通販Shopを調べる。インターネットなどない時代、連絡はメールに頼るしかない。しかしこの方法では日数がかかりすぎる。それにカード番号をメールに書いて送るのも不安。そこで、一番安全確実な方法は、Faxによる送信。しかし我が家にはFax電話がない。激安ショップ「アサヒ堂カメラ」で、これまた早速、購入。

商用プロバイダＩＩＪ社設立、ＷＷＷが発表されたのは1992年である。

準備完了！MACWORLDの中から一番有名らしきShop(広告のページ数が多かっただけですが)のMac WarehouseにFaxで見積もりを送信。すると、その日の深夜2時頃Faxがゴトゴトと動き、印刷を始めだした。すぐに飛び起き眠い目を擦りながらFaxに目をやると、そこにはSuperPaintは「USA Onlyで日本には出荷できない」との旨が書かれていた。

要するに、ALDAS製品はあなたの国に代理店があるので、「そちらの小売店を通して購入するように」とのアドバイス。アメリカでの購入価格は日本での価格の4分の1〜6分の1程度です。

一日おいて、他のShop(Mac Connection)へFaxを送信。見積書にはSuperPaintの金額が記されていた。価格はHome Publisherとのバンドルで$89.99（1ドルが85円ぐらいだったので7,600円位）。国内での販売価格は3,9000円位だったのでこれは安い。

その後、少し余裕?ができたので、FaxでIllustratorの見積もりを。Mac Connectionからの返事はIllustratorは出荷不可とのこと。Illustrator、PhotoshopはAdobeの主力商品。それゆえ、各国に代理店があり、価格が厳重に管理されていた。

大手のShopは管理が厳しいと判断、そこで雑誌の中から少しマイナーぽいShop（BOTTOM LINE）を探し、Faxを送信してみると見積書が送られてきた。購入可能である。早速、購入の意志を伝え購入。料金は$400弱。
DHLによる配送は、最短で3日間。驚きの速さでした。
